On a Network, an Agent Acts Where the Blast Radius Is Largest

Every network engineer carries an instinct that outsiders mistake for caution: a change in one place can travel. Reroute a path, push a policy, drop an interface, and the effect can ripple across campus, data center, WAN, and cloud before the first alert is read. The blast radius of a network change is the reason operators move deliberately, and it is the single most important thing an AI agent takes on the moment it is allowed to act on the network instead of merely describe it.

The Gartner® Hype Cycle™ for Enterprise Networking, 2026, states that “enterprises often face challenges accelerating adoption of new networking technologies due to the risk and blast radius of network change.”

An agent does not shrink that radius. It raises the stakes on whatever the agent understood before it touched anything.

We believe what decides whether an agent is safe to act on a network is the picture it acts from: a correlated view across the whole estate, not one vendor’s region of it. Coordinating across what you cannot see

Gartner says “The Peak of Inflated Expectations is concentrated around capabilities that promise to reshape how networks are built, operated and secured. Agentic NetOps and network digital twins sit firmly in the peak as enterprises and vendors place high expectations on AI-driven approaches that can reason network state, simulate outcomes and coordinate action across domains.[SS1] ”

That last clause carries the whole argument. Coordinating action across domains is where the value lives, and it is also where the risk concentrates, because an agent coordinating across domains it cannot fully see will commit a change against a network it only half understands.

Most enterprise networks make that full view hard to assemble. Telemetry is split across campus, data center, WAN, and several clouds, in different formats, owned by different teams and different vendors. Hand an agent that fragmentation and it will plan against a network that exists only in pieces, then act on the pieces it happened to have. On a system where one change cascades, that is the costly kind of mistake.

Correlating and normalizing telemetry across those domains is what fuses the fragments into one view an agent can coordinate from safely. Gartner says, “prefer vendors who provide explainable planning, event-driven initiation, governed execution with verification and rollback, and integration with your existing operational toolchain.”

Explainability and rollback earn their keep precisely where the blast radius is largest, and both depend on the agent having reasoned from a whole-network picture in the first place. Vendor and infrastructure independence is what lets that picture span the estate rather than ending at one domain’s edge.

Containing the radius

Preparing for agent-mediated operations without inviting a cascade is mostly about order of operations. Assemble the cross-domain view first, correlating and normalizing telemetry across campus, data center, WAN, and cloud before any agent is in the loop; the view earns its keep on its own and becomes the precondition for safe action later. Gartner states, “build operational experience and confidence, while aligning skills, data and governance models to support the higher impact of these technologies as they mature.”

Then pilot where a mistake stays contained, require explainable plans and reliable rollback, and widen autonomy only as the agent earns it.

Adopting agentic operations well, on a network, means closing the gaps in your cross-domain view before you hand an agent the keys. Those gaps are not a footnote. On a network, they are the radius.
