Synthetic Monitoring and the
One-Minute Outage

See how Selector synthetic monitoring catches a sub-minute outage and pins down where it happened and how long it lasted.

Description

In this demo, Selector synthetic monitoring tests the reachability and response time of business applications from probes around the world. The walkthrough uses four views on the HTTP Page Load dashboard:

  • Reachability Topology maps every probe-to-application path and flags the paths in violation.
  • The Reachability matrix shows the status of each application from each probe in a single grid.
  • Load Time Topology and its matching matrix track response-time thresholds the same way.
  • HTTP Insights breaks a single path into HTTP status code, reachability, packet loss, and response time.

The demo follows a brief outage that is easy to miss on a busy dashboard. Filtering the topology to violations isolates one failed path between the Europe probe and the File Share application. The reachability matrix shows File Share responding to every other probe, and the Europe probe reaching the other sites it tests. HTTP Insights then pinpoints the failure at 10:28, when the status code dropped, reachability went to unreachable, and packet loss hit 100 percent before recovering in under a minute. A check from the East probe confirms File Share stayed up the whole time. That rules out both the application and the probe, and gives the team a timestamped record of what failed, where, and for how long.
